Nations like Bangladesh have emerged as major exporters of textile products and have benefited from lower prices of cotton. However, while many energy-hungry nations such as India have efficiently used the recent low cost of oil to stockpile huge inventories of oil for future use, rising energy prices present long-term downside risks. The primary South Asian countries include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka, as well as smaller nations including Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives. In 1994, remittances from overseas workers accounted for 34 percent of the revenues earned from all goods and services exported from Bangladesh. In the case of India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, this percentage ranged from 14 to 17 percent.

The multinational nature of these groups makes them difficult to control and their influence is widespread, even involving officials involved in immigration.

Over the years, China has also increased its port and logistics construction in Sri Lanka. Taiwan and Korea are the two other Asian countries having their own Southeast Asian studies research centers, along with the United States, United Kingdom, France, and The Netherlands, former colonial powers in Southeast Asia.
